In Japan’s tourism industry, awareness of climate change measures and the SDGs has gradually increased. However, around the world, for the past 20 years, there has been a growing movement to pursue environmentally conscious and sustainable management in the facilities and operations of accommodation providers.

The international eco-label Green Key, established by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) headquartered in Denmark, has strict criteria and evaluates the environmental policies and sustainable operations of all types of accommodation facilities—from hotels to campgrounds. By choosing to stay at a Green Key–certified facility, consumers contribute to sustainable tourism development and help create positive change across society. Green Key’s environmental criteria are thoroughly documented, and even after obtaining the eco-label, facilities must undergo periodic reassessments to maintain and improve their initiatives. As of January 2026, more than 9,000 facilities in over 85 countries worldwide have obtained Green Key certification, and this number continues to grow.

The Japan Alliance for Responsible Tourism and Accommodation (JARTA) has served as the official Green Key contact point in Japan since April 2022. With Japanese-language support and assessments conducted by Japanese auditors, the certification process has become more accessible and cost-effective for accommodation providers in Japan.

Obtaining Green Key is not only about environmental initiatives—it also encourages facilities to improve service quality from new perspectives and strengthen brand value through sustainability as a new channel. As more facilities obtain Green Key, public environmental awareness increases, expanding the environmentally conscious market and creating a positive cycle that benefits certified facilities.

Features of Green Key

〇 An internationally recognized eco-label

Green Key is a globally adopted system in the tourism sector. To obtain the award, facilities must meet internationally defined criteria covering environmental and broader sustainability topics, and undergo regular evaluations by an independent third-party committee.

〇 A clear communication tool for guests

Green Key emphasizes communication with guests and promotes sustainable activities that reflect customer needs. As a result, the Green Key logo is widely recognized—particularly in Europe—by travelers and travel agencies as a key indicator when selecting hotels.

〇 Proof of implementing the latest environmental measures

Green Key assessments evaluate both the quality of a facility’s environmental efforts and the management system that ensures continuous improvement. Superficial environmental measures are not sufficient; however, the process of obtaining the award itself helps facilities implement effective environmental strategies.

From October 2026, revisions to the system are planned. This page introduces the currently published overview. For the latest information and details, please check the link below (updated regularly):
