【Certified Facility Introduction】 The Westin Osaka: Innovative Device Implementation and a “Playful Mindset” Driving Cultural Transformation in a Nature‑Rich Environment

1. Facility Overview

Located in Shin-Umeda City within walking distance of Osaka Station, The Westin Osaka is a historic luxury hotel that opened in1993. Adjacent to the Umeda Sky Building—famous for its Floating Garden Observatory—the hotel is surrounded by abundant greenery, symbolized by the on-site Naka-Shizen-no-Mori (Central Nature Forest). With303guest rooms, multiple restaurants, and banquet facilities, the hotel leverages its unique blend of urban convenience and natural tranquility to actively advance sustainability initiatives.

2. Good Practices

The hotel focuses on achieving strong water-saving results through the introduction of advanced technology and fundamentally revising its energy procurement strategy.

Remarkably Fast ROI Through High-Performance Showerheads: The hotel installed Mirable showerheads (by Science Co., Ltd.) in all guest rooms. Thanks to their exceptional water-saving performance, the expected two-year payback period was dramatically shortened—achieving full cost recovery in just about one year. This is a successful example of achieving both economic and environmental benefits in a short time while maintaining guest satisfaction.

Switching to Non-Fossil Energy and Achieving High Target Rates: To promote the use of renewable energy, the hotel optimized its electricity contract. Against the ambitious target of a 60% non-fossil energy ratio, the hotel has already reached 59.3%, bringing it extremely close to full achievement.

3.Challenges

As a long-established hotel, differences in mindset and generational gaps among employees have emerged as key challenges.

Equalizing Awareness Through “Playfulness”: When sustainability initiatives are perceived as mandatory “work,” enthusiasm varies among staff. To bridge the gap—especially between long‑tenured employees and younger staff—the hotel is exploring playful, low‑burden approaches that foster a culture where sustainability can be enjoyed and continued collectively.

4.Message

“We believe that approaching environmental initiatives with a sense of playfulness—rather than viewing them solely as obligations or costs—reduces the burden on staff and encourages voluntary participation. As a hotel with more than 30 years of history, we will continue combining new technologies with flexible thinking to protect and preserve this rich natural environment.”
