[Certified Facility Introduction] The Ritz‑Carlton, Osaka: Integrating Timeless Hospitality with Environmental Standards Through Organization‑Wide Awareness

1. Facility Overview

Directly connected to JR Osaka Station via an underground passage, The Ritz‑Carlton, Osaka opened in 1997 as the first Ritz‑Carlton in Japan and will celebrate its 29th anniversary in May 2026. With 291 guest rooms, six restaurants and bars, and more than ten banquet venues, the hotel stands as one of Japan’s leading luxury properties. Building on its long‑standing commitment to the local community, the hotel became the first in Osaka Prefecture to obtain Green Key certification.

2. Good Practices

The hotel has systematized its existing initiatives to ensure that every employee can recognize sustainability efforts as “their own.”

・Thorough Internal Communication Using Both Analog and Digital Tools: The 13 Green Key criteria and corresponding initiatives are visually summarized and displayed on staff bulletin boards. Progress updates are also shared during quarterly all‑staff meetings, fostering a shared understanding across departments.

・Expanding Team Involvement Across Organizational Levels: While the initial project team consisted mainly of department heads, participation has broadened over the second and third years of renewal. Increasing numbers of frontline staff now take part, shifting the initiative from a top‑down effort to one driven by on‑site team members.

3. Challenges

As a large, multifunctional hotel, the property faces challenges related to varying levels of understanding across departments.

・Equalizing Understanding Across Teams: While each department has deep knowledge of its own operational area, awareness of other departments’ initiatives remains uneven. Strengthening cross‑department communication to ensure that the entire hotel understands the intent behind all criteria—and can generate synergistic effects—is a key goal moving forward.

4. Message

“Since announcing our pursuit of Green Key certification, we have received an increasing number of positive comments from guests. Our initiatives are not something we started from scratch; they are an extension of the values we have cherished throughout our history. As we continue to uphold our tradition of refined hospitality, we aim to deepen each staff member’s understanding and move forward together toward a more sustainable future.”
