[Certified Facility Introduction] Aloft Osaka Dojima: Optimizing Water Pressure and Developing “Multi‑Skilled Champions” to Support a Lean Team

1. Facility Overview

Located in Osaka’s Dojima district, Aloft Osaka Dojima is known for its playful and vibrant design. Despite operating as a select‑service hotel with a compact team of around 60 employees, the property is committed to raising environmental awareness among all staff and building a sustainable operational structure that will remain strong five and ten years into the future.

2. Good Practices

The hotel’s strengths lie in its use of technical data and an operational approach grounded in on‑site insights.

Precise Water‑Flow Adjustment Using Pressure Gauges: Initially, the hotel implemented a uniform reduction of shower water flow, which led to secondary issues such as reduced toilet water pressure and unstable hot‑water temperatures at the sink. In preparation for the second‑year renewal, the engineering team collaborated to recalibrate the system using water‑pressure gauges. By optimizing settings according to the building’s plumbing structure, the hotel successfully achieved both water conservation and stable guest satisfaction by eliminating these issues.

・3A Three‑Member “Champion” System: To prevent sustainability initiatives from becoming dependent on a single individual, the hotel now operates with a three‑person leadership team. By including frontline staff who are deeply familiar with daily operations, the hotel has created a structure that allows guest feedback and on‑site improvement needs to be identified and addressed quickly.

3. Challenges

The hotel’s biggest ongoing challenge is achieving a unified level of awareness among all 60 employees. Rather than relying on a small group of dedicated members, the hotel continues to explore how to enhance training and information‑sharing so that every staff member can engage with sustainability initiatives with the same level of commitment.

4. Message

“For select‑service hotels, a common challenge is how to pursue sustainability efficiently and consistently with a limited number of staff. By sharing our failures and solutions openly, we hope to grow together with other properties facing similar challenges.”
