[Certified Facility Introduction] Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay Hotel

1. Facility Overview

Located in Urayasu City, Chiba Prefecture, this is one of Japan’s leading large-scale urban resort hotels, welcoming many domestic and international guests every day as an official hotel of Tokyo Disney Resort® and under Marriott International's Sheraton brand. Boasting a total of 1,016 guest rooms, the facility initially acquired the international environmental certification "Green Key" in February 2025. In February 2026, its rigorous international standard maintenance and management system for a large-scale facility was officially recognized, and the certification renewal was successfully completed. The hotel fulfills its social responsibility as a large-scale property and powerfully drives environmental initiatives within the tourism industry.

2. Good Practice

"Developing a water supply system throughout the facility and guest rooms, and replacing single-use plastic water bottles" To reduce plastic waste generated from its massive inventory of over 1,000 guest rooms, the hotel is aggressively promoting the development of water supply systems in guest rooms and throughout the entire property. By transitioning from the conventional provision of drinking water in disposable plastic bottles to alternative methods with a lower environmental impact, the hotel has significantly suppressed plastic waste emissions. Through a circular accommodation experience that does not assume single-use items, a mechanism has been established allowing guests to naturally participate in environmental conservation during their stay without compromising comfort.

3. Challenges

Because it is a facility with one of the largest scales in Japan, featuring 1,016 rooms, the fact that applying for certification across the entire hotel and maintaining those strict standards afterward requires an enormous amount of time and cost stands as a major hurdle. Furthermore, even though the advanced Green Key certification has been acquired, its value and the specific significance of these initiatives have not yet completely permeated the general guest base. Consequently, the hotel feels a challenge regarding how to promote and communicate information to widely raise awareness among more people about the fact that it holds this certification.

4. Message

"Holding the internationally trusted Green Key certification is a source of great pride that allows us to confidently demonstrate our hotel’s stance on sustainability to both domestic and international guests. In particular, when presenting proposals to organizers of conferences and events (MICE), sharing the fact that we hold this certification earns us solid trust. Furthermore, when hosting events at our hotel, we find immense significance and reward in being able to visualize the environmental impact of events through Marriott's eco-conscious event program 'Connect Responsibly,' and in presenting choices that allow customers themselves to proactively engage in CO2 reduction through carbon offsets and other means."

Advice to other hotels currently working on Green Key:

"Even for a large-scale hotel exceeding 1,000 rooms, the path to sustainability relies above all else on the 'accumulation of small daily steps.' Instead of trying to make everything perfect from the beginning, first set clear goals and a realistic schedule as an organization, and keep moving forward without wavering. That steady persistence is precisely what will ultimately lead to major results."
