[Certified Facility Introduction] Hotel Anteroom Naha: Art Hub Tackles "Bamboo Amenity" Recycling and Achieves Millions of Yen in Cost Reductions

1. Facility Overview
Located in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, "Hotel Anteroom Naha" is built around the concept of "Art & Culture." True to its name "Anteroom" (waiting room), it serves as a gateway where guests can encounter and connect with local culture. To protect Okinawa’s beautiful environment, the property drives unique recycling projects and thorough energy management stemming from the staff’s own everyday observations and a sense of responsibility.

2. Good Practice
The hotel achieves notable results through an innovative "farmland return" system that breaks free from conventional frameworks, alongside meticulous "backyard management."

"Recycling Project" for Bamboo Toothbrushes: This initiative started from the staff's shared sentiment: "We want to do something about the massive volume of toothbrushes discarded after being used just once." Instead of paying disposal fees to discard them as waste, the hotel collaborated with local partner farmers to build a system where the bamboo handles are shredded into chips and spread across fields as a "soil conditioner." This establishes a locally self-contained, win-win model that moves the hotel closer to zero waste while helping farmers reduce costs by serving as an alternative to imported materials (such as coco peat).

"CO2 Reduction Actions" in the Backyard: The hotel implements rigorous power and water-saving measures in staff breakrooms, warehouses, and restrooms. Staff awareness was raised by visualizing the difference in water volume based on restroom flush buttons, and fine-tuned improvements were accumulated, such as adjusting the nighttime warehouse air conditioning setting by 1 degree. As a result, the hotel achieved a reduction in power costs on the scale of several million yen annually, even as the property's occupancy rate increased.

Beach Cleans by Multinational Staff: Initiated by Nepalese staff members, cleaning activities in cooperation with local communities and beach clean organizations have been continuously carried out for the past three years.

3. Challenges
The future outlook centers on how to prevent the internal training and initiatives from being a "one-off event," expanding them to the local community and next generations to take root as a lasting culture.

Spreading to the Local Community: Inquiries from the Naha City Office as well as local high school and university students are increasing. Expectations are high regarding how to elevate a single facility's initiatives into "regional environmental education" to maximize its value.

4. Message
"Our bamboo amenity recycling was featured on the evening news program, receiving a massive response within Okinawa Prefecture. We are delighted that our activities are reaching Naha City and the students, serving as a catalyst for people to think about environmental issues. Moving forward, true to our nature as an art hub, we will continue to contribute to the preservation of Okinawa's environment through creative approaches."
